PROs and CONs of your netbooks

Postby chiemartin » Mon Jun 08, 2009 12:57 pm

I think it's best for everybody to share the PROs and CONs of all netbooks that we have had in the PAST and PRESENT, so this would be a great guide for future netbook buyers and upgrade-rs who would wish to purchase a new netbook or a 2nd hand netbook, which may be a new or old model.

We hope and encourage everybody to contribute for everybody's benefit. Many thanks! ^:)^

NOTE: Eventhough your netbook or past netbooks may have been posted with their PROs and CONs, we'd love to hear your take on it/them. Remember, PROs and CONs are subjective, so your opinion is gladly encouraged and important to our readers. Many thanks again!

Here are my 2 netbooks:

Image

ASUS EEE PC 701 4GB w/ webcam

PROs
* Very compact, thanks to the 7-inch LCD.
* Easy to fit in a bag, especially in bigger belt bags.
* Easy to skin, especially if you have a crystal case. No need for sticker skins.
* Very portable power adapter. No power brick unlike newer netbooks.
* Many available accessories (crystal case, battery, leather case, charger, etc.) and mods (touchscreen, etc.), as this is the pioneer of all netbooks.
* Many ports of entry (3 x USB, 1 x VGA, 1 x card reader, 1 x microphone jack, 1 x headphone jack)
* Expandable storage, thanks to the mini-PCIe slot (not available in all 701 units).
* EEECtl utility to adjust processor and fan speed.
* Good volume, as the speakers are located beside the LCD.
* Very sturdy netbook. I think it accidentally dropped twice already, but it came out kicking! Ahehehehe.

CONs
* Small keyboard. Bad right-Shift key placement.
* Small LCD, low resolution. 800x480 maximum, but can be adjusted to a higher resolution using EEECtl, but will lose pixels in the process.
* Trackpad button. Due to my acidic sweat, the silver plating on the left button got tarnished. Ahahahaha.
* Easily heats. I have to use a netbook cooler underneath and an external fan (pointed at the heat vent on the side) to control the heat during hot days. Normal temperature was at least 55 degrees to a maximum of 65 degrees.
* Small 4GB SSD storage. Even with the 8GB model, it's too small. You'd have to boot programs off your SDHC.
* Issues with installing Linux distributions with a SSD in the mini-PCIe slot. This was an issue with mine, so it was either I went the Windows way, or the Linux way (without the 2nd SSD installed).
* The hinge looks ugly. Ahahahaha.

HP Mini 1109TU

PROs
* 92%-sized keyboard. Great for typing. Bigger right-Shift key under the Enter button, and above the directional keys.
* Bigger trackpad. Nicely-located mouse buttons on the side of the trackpad. I dunno, I just love it.
* Dedicated button to enable and disable the trackpad and mouse buttons. Great when you're typing.
* Bigger LCD with plastic lid. Bright LCD. Great glossy finish. I love it.
* Fancy-looking power and connectivity switches. Connectivity switch goes orange or blue depending whether it's enabled or disabled.
* Very sleek over-all design. It's pretty thin and elegant.
* Good sounds from the speaker. Love the speaker-hinge silver-lining.
* Great for Windows, Linux distros (especially Linux Mint, which works out of the box) and Mac OSX (though I have yet to OSX-ify mine... thanks to LeMaurien19 for the term. Ahehehehe).
* Outer shell looks great. Glossy finish, with silver swirls.
* Easily accessible memory slot.
* Small power brick, which is compact enough to fit into a bag.
* Already with Bluetooth, and pre-installed with XP SP3.

CONs
* Only 2 x USB slots.
* No VGA port, though there's a VGA adapter that can be purchased (and of course, it'll cost you).
* Flimsy power and connectivity switches. What if the spring goes kaput?
* Glossy plastic lid covering the LCD is prone to smudges. I'm too lazy to clean mine.
* Hard to find a perfect fit netbook sleeve, except of course, the sleeve that's designed exactly for the HP Mini.
* Battery is located underneath, so higher-capacity 3rd-party batteries wouldn't sit well with the HP Mini, as compared to other netbooks. I'm just assuming. Ahehehehe.
* Webcam lighting sucks, so I'll probably have to remove the filter in-between one of these days.
* Only 80GB HDD, and it's the 1.8-incher, which isn't the standard, so I'm assuming it'll be harder to find cheaper storage upgrades.
* Microphone-headphone combo jack is annoying. You can only use one function at a time. Would have been better if they split it into 2.

MSI Wind U100+

Image

Pro:
-Priced at P20,999 (with TPC discount)
-"new" 1.66 ghz Atom N280 cpu
-"huge" 250gb HDD
-2gb ram
-big and bright 10" LCD screen
-comes with six cell 4400 mAh battery, good for 4.5 hours typical use.
-3, 6, and 9 cell battery packs easily available through internet retailers
-large keyboard (for a netbook)
-vga port
-3 usb ports
-separate mic and speaker ports
-sd card slot
-internals easy to access by removing bottom "shell"
-internal mods relatively easy to upgrade/add with minimal skill.
-turbo mode (overclocking/underclocking by press of a button)
-many many mods available for people who want more features for their U100 Wind like wifi b/g/n, bluetooth, gps, touchscreen, radio tuner, tv tuner, bigger hdd, sdd upgrade, different OS, bigger battery, multi-touch touchpad, Apple Macbook look & feel, etc

Con:
-screen hinge feels slightly flimsy (as compared to my previous Acer Aspire 110)
-wifi b/g only (other country versions have b/g/n)
-no bluetooth (other country versions have BT)
-no multi-touch touchpad control (but mod available for this).
-tinfoil speakers (great for beeps, bad for music, movies)
-styling is rather "ordinary", begs to be modified.
-different models looks the same.
-easy to tip backward due to weird weight balance ("footing" mod fixes this.)
-"click" noise can be heard if using the unit in a very quiet place
-some people complain that fan is noisy (i can barely hear it).
-lcd screen too bright if used in a dark room and set at lowest brightness setting via keyboard controls. (can be adjusted via graphics control settings to even less brightness)
-turbo mode doesn't seem to do much (underclock/overclock).
-no explanations or documentation included for "turbo" function beyond how to turn it off/on included with the unit's booklets and leaflets.
-outer case is a fingerprint magnet, especially for black units.

Acer Aspire One 110

Image

Pro:
-cheap for an Atom based netbook (P12K)
-9 inch LCD screen was bright and great for videos
-3 usb ports
-vga port
-LAN port
-Wifi b/g
-separate mic and speaker
-lightweight (with original 3 cell battery)
-comes with leather pouch
-boots to "desktop" in seconds using Linplus Linux.
-SDD equipped (shock proof solid state drive)
-two SD card slots (dedicated memory expansion slot & card reader slot)
-"cheap" expandable storage via SD Card slot (to supplement 8gb SSD), great for installing applications and storing data.
-solid construction feel.
-bigger battery packs available in the internet retail stores.
-relatively battery friendly (six cell 4400mAh battery lasts 6.5 hours of typical use)
-touchpad has multi-touch feature (install proper WinXP driver)
-rotate screen hot-key (90/180/270 degree rotation)
-despite unfriendly internal parts access, many mods can be done (2.5" HDD/SDD upgrade, ram upgrade, tv tuner, radio tuner, bigger battery pack, OS change, internal bluetooth, etc)

Con:
-no "factory" Windows XP option (but Windows XP drivers available for DIY install)
-small and slow SSD (8gb only and made Windows XP crawl on boot up)
-SSD not SATA (no SATA port ready but mod can be made to solder a SATA port into it)
-glossy screen can have lots of glare in outdoor use
-no bluetooth
-no wifi N
-difficult to access internals (have to access through keyboard)
-bad speakers
-RAM upgrade up to 1.5gb only due to built-in 512kb ram.
-smooth outer case fingerprint magnet.
-keyboard is rather small, hard to type quickly
-touchpad buttons on sides
-underside tends to get hot (bad ventilation)

ahehehe, nakalimutan ko kasi yung password ko e :D hey chie, di naman ako pasaway...konti lang :P

anyway, making bawi:

ASUS EEE PC 701

PROS: :-BD
-lightweight and durable; Blackeee managed to survive my "manual typewriter" method of inputting, even after over a year of use.

- uber-portable; kahit saan pwede isaksak. it even fit in my maxpedition fatboy versipack!

- fits my needs for a portable netbook; I can write my reports/articles, do spreadsheets, surf and email, serve as the class default unit for powerpoint presentations

- Blackeee's default Xandros OS makes him (somewhat) immune to windoze virii

- he's still cute, even after all this time ;)

CONS:
- tulad ng may-ari, mabilis uminit ang ulo! Grabe, I swear, he sometimes cranks out enough BTUs to turn an egg into hardboiled lunch! :((

- mabilis ma-low batt pag madaming bukas na apps :(

- I have to do regular backups to my WD Passport, as Blackeee's tiny storage doesn't quite cut it.

- He's already considered old for his time, being a phased out model.

- he's too cute, sometimes :)
