Can Wifi Leech Increase the Signal Thru Repeater?

Postby bonalaw » Sun Feb 21, 2010 8:14 pm

When we are leeching on the wifi signal of a neighbor, can we possibly increase the wifi signal by using a repeater without the knowledge of the source of the signal?

When you say increasing the signal by using a repeater, do you mean increasing the distance the signal can reach, or increasing the signal your netbook receives?

For both. Can it be done for both increasing the area reached and that which the netbook receives?

kung walang security yung signal ng neighbor mo, it's possible, BUT, strong signal doesn't necessarily mean faster wireless speed. Using a repeater or setting up two routers as WDS cuts the wireless speed in half (long explanation, better just to google it) so the theoretical speed of 54mbps would only be 26mbps. It's not noticeable when browsing the net since most internet connection speed is way lesser than that. It's the file transfer between computers on the same network that will be affected. That's why it's advisable that repeater setup or WDS system is only done on a wireless N network.

Another way is to just use a usb wireless lan with an external antenna. that will surely increase the signal your computer receives without going to the hassle of setting up a repeater. Oh, and get the wireless N type just to be sure in case you don't know that type of router your neighbor uses. madami na sa cdrking na mabibili nun.

Sir Ranns, are you referring to the "LP-8187E Wireless LAN USB 2.0 Adapter with Antenna" sold by CD-R King shown in this link:

Yes though it's a/b/g only. The wifi N is the white one but no antenna. The white one is the one i've tried.

Salamat sir Ranns. Is the signal strong even if there is no external antenna?

For the wireless N, yes, it has a fairly strong gain.

I finally got the Wireless-N USB Dongle with Antenna. It has an excellent signal gain. But because the signal from the source is fluctuating, maybe I would need a repeater or extender. Which brand do you suggest?
